Is the past brighter then our future?

I watched a movie last week, where the guy wished he had lived in the 1920's. It's some kind of fantasy that some people have that this time is not good, but that an earlier time was better. he then travelled back in time to 1920, every night, where he met a girl who believed the 1890's better than the 1920's they were in. every generation has a group of people that believe the past was where they were meant to be and that their present has no greatness in it.
The problem here is that, the people who lived in those times, who made those times great, were only seen as great once that time had passed. We only see greatness, genius and renaissance in the rearview mirror, rarely do we pay enough attention to the present to realise what is happening right now and that we are living in the time we were meant to.
I have often had this fantasy about going back in the past, but not because of wanting to be around great moments in time, but I really believe that live then was simpler and great because of that.
Yesterday I spent the day lazing about in the sun with friends, playing scrabble and drinking wine. Why is this such a rare thing in our lives, we should slow down and LIVE our lives.
I fear for the future, where it goes so fast that it will consume our days just to keep up with it and we will get lost in the technology and the science and the tweets and status updates, until we find that our status updates just bleed into one and have no real meaning, because we have not lived enough to have something to say. I know it's a bit heavy-handed dissing technology as I am writing this on my blog, but this is my diary. I don't want or need for you to read it. do so if it will be important to you, but decide what is important to you and make that part of your life. We are flooded with so many useful and then just as useless things.
